Cooking is a fun feature allowing you to cook delicious dishes and drinks using ingredients in Animal Crossing: New Horizons! Learn how to get started with Cooking and unlock new Cooking DIY recipes.

Newly introduced in the massive Version 2.0 Update released on November 3rd, you’ll need to have your copy of Animal Crossing: New Horizons fully updated to experience Cooking.

How To Unlock Cooking

To begin your new Animal Crossing culinary journey, you’ll first need to purchase the Be a Chef! DIY Recipe+ upgrade for 2,000 Nook Miles at the Nook Stop Terminal! That’ll unlock the Cooking feature in DIY Recipes+ on your NookPhone.

You’ll find that two new food categories have been added to your NookPhone: Savory and Sweet! Most importantly, some base level ingredients can now be crafted using produce like Flour with Wheat and Sugar with Sugarcane.

A few starter recipes like Grilled Sea Bass With Herbs, Tomato Curry, Carrot Potage, and Pancakes come equipped to get you started, but there are far more to unlock than this!

Cooking requires a working Kitchen furniture item as well in order to craft these new Cooking DIY recipes. To make matters simple, a new Stonework Kitchen DIY Recipe is unlocked for you too.

How To Cook Food

To cook food and drinks in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, find a suitable Kitchen item and interact with it to open up your cookbook and pick a recipe!

In order to cook many dishes though, you’ll first need to make a more fundamental ingredient such as Sugar or Flour, but not all the time.

Just flip through your DIY Recipes+ cookbook and select the dish that you’d like to cook provided you have all the materials required. If you’re missing vegetables and produce for a recipe, you’ll need to grow them with seeds from Leif — learn more here.

How To Unlock New Cooking Recipes

The easiest way to expand your Cooking DIY Recipes collection is to pick up the Basic Cooking Recipes book inside the cabinet at Nook’s Cranny for 4,980 Bells! This will quickly improve your selection of recipes with dishes like Carrot Cake, Organic Bread, and Seaweed Soup.

Next, it’s a great idea to go spend some time fishing in your island’s ocean and rivers as many Cooking DIY Recipes can be learned by obtaining fish and sea creatures.

For example, after catching a Red Snapper in the ocean, we unlocked a brand new recipe called Pesce All’Acqua Pazza that can be cooked with 1 Red Snapper, 1 Tomato, and 1 Manila Clam!

Another way that you can discover new Cooking DIY Recipes is by simply peeking into your villager’s homes and catching them in the act of cooking — they’ll be happy to share their recipes with you, just like when they craft items!

Finally, we’ve heard reports that Cooking DIY Recipes can even be found inside of Balloon Presents in the sky that you shoot down too.
